Diamond Buying Guide

Understanding the 4Cs of Diamond Quality And Federico’s 5th C

  • Color – The term actually refers to the absence of color. The less color there is in a stone, the more valuable and desirable it is. although some of these differences may not be visible to the naked eye, these differences directly impact the overall quality and price of the stone.
  • Clarity – Measures the placement, size and number of internal ‘inclusions,’ and external ‘blemishes.’ Grades run from ‘Flawless,’ with virtually no imperfections, to ‘Included,’ which contain a significant number of imperfections.
  • Cut – The cut does not refer to a diamond’s shape, but to the arrangement and proportion of its facets and the quality of the workmanship. The brilliance, sparkle and fire in a diamond is determined by cut. Grades range from ‘Excellent’ to ‘Poor.’
  • Carat – This is a diamond’s weight. The higher the carat weight, generally the stone is more expensive. Two diamonds of equal carat weight can have a very different price when the other three Cs are considered.
  • Confidence – The staff at Federico’s will do just that!  We take pride in the time we spend with our customers, to educate you and build confidence!

No matter how beautiful a diamond may look you simply cannot see its true quality. The 4Cs of diamond quality will provide you with the information you need to know the diamond’s actual quality.

Choose your jeweler with the same care you would chose any other professional

Make sure your jeweler is an expert, open to questions and able to provide answers in clear, simple language. An educated jeweler will not only explain the quality of a diamond to you, but will also be able to demonstrate the differences between apparently similar stones. They can show you a number of diamonds that fall in your budget so that you can compare and make an educated choice.

Protect Your Purchase

Have your diamond appraised and insured. Appraisers and insurers rely on diamond grading reports to accurately evaluate the value of gems. We offer appraisals services to help protect your investment.
